Yah, that didn’t happen! Now I’m a few months away from my fifty-first birthday and my goal is basically the same. So what’s different and what am I doing to reach my goals? Glad you asked…
I’ve been skinny most of my life. So much so the other kids made fun of me back in high school. I started working out around age 16. I wanted to be stronger, well I wanted bigger muscles. Weight lifting tends to make my muscles look fuller, although still skinny and not all that much bigger. I tried everything to gain weight – I consumed more pizza, corn and protein shakes than any one person should in an entire lifetime. Yet, when I became pregnant with my son in my early 20’s, my doctor told me I was anorexic and therefore needed to gain 20 pounds before I even started gaining my pregnancy weight.
So what happened? Well, I had a complete hysterectomy at age 29. After that things started to change. My skin dried out – yay, no more acne – finally. But, I also put on weight. All in my mid-section. And, it’s been super hard to take it off. But still, I’ve been fortunate to remain “skinny” by most people’s standards, through exercise and decent nutrition. Until…
About eight years ago stress happened!!! A full-time desk job that is semi-unsatisfying. More stress!! Chronic pain in my hip. Gut issues. And, more STRESS!!!
I took up running at age 47. I wanted to run the Disneyland Half Marathon! Since then I have run several half marathons, 5Ks, 10Ks and two full marathons!!! And, you know what happened? I gained weight – yep, while training for the marathons. Why? Because I was hungry all the time and TIRED! OMG, if I wasn’t running or working I was sleeping. I didn’t have time or energy to weightlift, so there went my muscle. Bad food choices… well you can see where this is going.
Side note: Running is amazing and I highly recommend it. I lost some weight initially. But, more importantly I found confidence in myself again! I followed the Couch to 5K plan to learn how to run. I love this plan by the way. I could barely run 45 seconds straight when I first started. But, with every mile gained I felt empowered!!!! And, eight months later I crossed the finish line of my first half marathon.
If you’re still with me you’re probably wondering “Okay, but what’s different now?” So let me just cut to the chase…
I AM DIFFERENT. I’m no longer working towards ‘the best shape of my life”. Nope – instead I’m working on feeling my best, mentally and physically. Don’t get me wrong – losing some fat – is still A goal, it’s just not the goal.
I’m working on my fitness. Working out is a huge part of who I am and I just feel better when I’m working out regularly. And, believe it or not, I have way less pain when I regularly workout. Currently, I’m working out with BeachBody on Demand – Core De Force. It’s an MMA style kickboxing workout. So fun and great for the mid-section.
I’ve been working on my nutrition. Healthier foods, controlled portions, some treats. Hubby (Ozy, you’ll meet him another time) and I are meal prepping. We share that on our blog too – feel free to take a look. And, Shakeology – a nutrient dense shake – once a day.
Ozy and I are spending more time engaging in FUN… we hike a lot. We are huge Disney fans – yes, we’re the old couple with no kids at Disneyland – but, we love it! And, we recently started taking ballroom dancing lessons. So fun and a great way to stay connected to your spouse.
I am practicing gratitude, self-affirmations and other self-improvement things. Basically, I’m learning to own my sh*t! By the way – if you want to read a good book – I highly recommend The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. In a nut shell, consistently doing the small things over time will yield great results! But, read the book, Darren will inspire you.
